"Shocking Attack: Danish PM Mette Frederiksen Assaulted in Copenhagen Square!"

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was left "shocked" following an attack in Copenhagen, according to her office. The incident occurred on a square in the city center where a man approached her and struck her. The attacker has been apprehended.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the attack, labeling it a "despicable act" contrary to European values. Frederiksen's office issued a statement confirming the assault but provided no further details. Police have arrested a suspect and are investigating the incident, refraining from disclosing a motive at this time.

Witnesses reported seeing the attack, describing the assailant shoving Frederiksen forcefully, causing her to stagger but not fall to the ground. Following the incident, she sought refuge at a nearby café.

The assault occurred just days before Denmark's EU election. Frederiksen, leader of the Social Democrats, had participated in an election event earlier that day. Despite her party's leading position in polls, support has waned in recent months.

Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke expressed solidarity with Frederiksen, emphasizing the shock and concern among those close to her. EU officials, including Charles Michel, condemned the attack as cowardly and expressed outrage.

The incident is reminiscent of a recent attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who survived being shot multiple times. Frederiksen, aged 46, became Denmark's prime minister in 2019, making history as the country's youngest leader. Her tenure has been marked by notable events, including a dispute with former U.S. President Donald Trump over Greenland and criticism regarding her government's handling of the mink cull during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022.
